I
recommend that the beginner start with "Polly" our
introductory model, which is a vertical spirit fired, stationary engine.
This model is a good introduction to the hobby, as it involves a range
of basic metalworking techniques, e.g. riveting, annealing, silver
soldering, cutting, fitting, turning, etc. The engine is made from
standard sizes of brass and copper stock and no expensive castings are
required. For this model the construction has been simplified by the use
of jigs, formers and press tools for making boilers ends. Drawings and
materials are provided at a small charge.
Polly
is a useful exercise in gaining experience, using this model as a
yardstick of their ability and so gauge what sort of model they might
tackle next. This may be a more complex model such as locomotives,
traction engines, and steam plants for boats.
Polly
was described in model engineer and this article is reproduced in a book
along with several other stationary engines, any of which are suitable
for the beginner.
Many complete models have been built entirely at the evening
class and help and advice is always on hand.
For
the person who has some practical ability and enjoys working in metal,
model engineering is an ideal hobby.
