| The members of the society have
very broad interests.
Broadly speaking these fall into the category of steam powered models.
Other areas of interest are tool making and accessories for
machine tools.
Many members who own their own lathes and drilling machines wish to
improve the versality of the commercial product with simple accessories. A
tailstock dieholder is an ideal project to learn about cutting, turning,
drilling, boring and maybe knurling.
By far the most popular projects are steam powered ones.
These fall into two categories, stationary and mobile. The former often a
first time project take the form of a simple vertical oscillating
engine. A more sophisticated slide valve stationary engine often
follows. The ultimate stationary engine is the beam engine, of the type
used in Cornish tin mines.
Steam boat engines make an interesting project, these
come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from simple single cylinder
oscillating to multi cylinder slide valve varieties. Marine boilers add
another interesting aspect to the marine power plant.
Locomotives are probably the most popular projects
amongst members. All gauges from 'O' through to 5" have been
constructed by members. The society has vast experience in small
locomotive construction and refurbishment and help is always on hand.
Traction engines are also constructed by members, some
take the form of the well known 'Mamod' whilst others are of the
sophisticated 'Allchin' variety.
